Japanese Language Dialects
The dialects belonging to these two groups are to a large extent not deriving from the standard dialect.
Japanese language dialects. The most common dialect is the kansai dialect that includes the osaka dialect. There are even mountain villages or isolated islands that speak dialects deriving from old japanese. Local cultures have flourished and developed. Osaka is the dialect of the tokyo area and is considered the standard dialect for japanese.
The ryukyuan languages of okinawa prefecture and the southern islands of kagoshima prefecture form a separate branch of the japonic. While hyōjungo literally standard japanese is the most commonly used form of the language japan also enjoys a rich variety of dialects. There are dialects from peripheral regions that may be incomprehensible to speakers from different parts of the country. It is a distinct japanese language that has retained features from the ancient eastern japanese based on the 8th century records of man yōshū.
It has some similarities to the ryukyuan languages and the kyushu dialects.
